Yamunotri: The Origin of the river Yamuna
Yamunotri is the place where the sacred river Yamuna starts its 1370 km. journey. Yamunotri temple is considered one of the holiest shrines in Hinduism. This sacred place is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna and is believed to be the origin of holy river Yamuna. It is situated at an altitude of 3235 metres in the Garhwal Himalayas in the state of Uttarakhand and the place is visited by thousands of Hindu pilgrims. The temple of Yamuna is on the left bank of Yamuna was made by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal.
According to Hindu beliefs, Ganga and Yamuna are considered as India`s most sacred rivers. Various stories connected with Him are found in the Hindu scriptures, especially the Puranas, like that of Kaliya Daman (the subduing of Kaliya) a poisonous snake. It is also said that Lord Krishna blessed the river Yamuna, when Vasudeva was crossing it with baby Lord Krishna. River Yamuna crosses several states, Uttarakhand, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, passing by Himachal Pradesh and later Delhi and meets several of its tributaries on the way. Triveni Sangam is the meeting point of three legendary rivers of the country - Ganga River, Yamuna River and Saraswati River near Allahabad.
